Notes
In 1999 in the period of 15 days, Robert Zandvliet completed 48 large monotypes. From those, a small selection was designated for the Varick Series. Although this particular work was not part of it, it reveals the artist's ingenuity especially when it comes to landscape format.
Bold lines in Zandvliet's paintings suggest a certain nonchalance, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Tempera is a challenging medium, it dries fast and thus requires thinking ahead to avoid mistakes. Zandvliet carefully plans each line in order to "find" the image. He is looking for what lies behind the ever-changing appearance of things. Can a painting be self-representative, without the artist having to say anything about it? As Zandvliet concludes: "Als je goed kijkt, krijg je antwoord op alle vragen." ["If you look closely, you will get answers to all questions."]
