Note: Johannes Bosboom was a Dutch painter and watercolourist and a member of the Hague School. In this work he depicted the ‘Hofje van Nieuwkoop’, a national monument in The Hague built in 1661.
The regent room of this courtyard was intended as a meeting place for administrators, but over the years the function of the chamber changed. From 1861 to 1887 it was rented to the artist association ‘Pulchri Studio’, which used the location for their social gatherings and theatre performances.

The well-known photo of the Pulchri Members by Maurits Verveer (1817-1903), which was gifted to Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870) for his eightieth birthday, was made in this courtyard in 1867.
