Signed 'Stiphout' (lower right); framed. Recently professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished, light imprint of the stretcher along the upper edge, in very good condition. Provenance: Private collection; City of Amsterdam.
Notes: Although later in his career Theo Stiphout made almost exclusively abstract and geometrical works inspired by Mondriaan and his theory of colour, back in the 1930s the artist was mostly occupied with cityscapes. In the context of the political ideologies of the inter-war period, Stiphout decided to depict the modern industrial society - railway stations, factories, viaducts, labour workers. Stylistically his works from that period fall into the category of 'New Objectivity' (Nieuwe Zakelijkheid), they strike the beholder with an austere colour palette, feelings of soberness and sterility.
