Polychrome bronze with integral base, monogrammed 'BC' (on the base), numbered and dated 11.10.2007 and marked with foundry stamp (on the suitcase), cast by Barthelemy Art, Crest. Light white oxidation in the recesses in places, else in very good condition. With a certificate of origin and a booklet about the artist by Galeries Bartoux. Provenance: Private collection; Galerie Bartoux, Saint Paul de Vence, France, 2007
Notes: This sculpture from the series 'Les Voyageurs' [The Travellers] reflects the artist's passion for travelling and nomadic lifestyle. Working with such a heavy, massive material as bronze, Bruno Catalano manages to achieve remarkable elusiveness and lightness in his sculptures. His travellers are present here and now only for a moment, they will vanish without a trace within a blink of an eye. There is no better model for Catalano than Arthur Rimbaud. This rogue genius who only needed a few years to conquer the highest ranks of the French cultural elite and the international zenith of modern poetry made his life's work vanish. After publishing the masterpiece 'Une saison en enfer' at the age of 19, the only book published in his lifetime, he turned his back on literary life and went abroad. After a ramble through Europe, a period with the KNIL and travelling through North Africa, he settled in Abyssinia. It was only shortly before his death that he returned to France, for health reasons. In an ultimate attempt to stop cancer he loses his leg. In vain, he dies in hospital, only 37 years old. The one-leg-Rimbaud offered here is a variant on a two-legged version with a loose right leg as depicted on the certificate. This is entirely in line with the multi-part works known by the artist. For example, the sculptures from the 'fragments' series consist of a 'normal' Catalano that already lacks a large part of the body, next to a decapitated version, while in the third one only the luggage remains.
