Parnass', after Parnassus, the seat of Apollo and the Muses in ancient Greece, is the name of the gallery that opened in 1949 in Wuppertal, Germany, on the initiative of Rolf Jährling. At the time, the city still showed extensive war damage. Parnass focuses on 'informal art' and is a meeting place for national and international writers and visual artists, including Joseph Beuys, Hundertwasser, the Dutch Jaap Wagemaker, Karel Appel, Ger Lataster and Carel Visser, the South Korean Nam June Paik and the Americans Sam Middleton and Shinkichi Tajiri.
Shinkichi Tajiri was born on 7 December 1923 in Los Angeles, California. In 1941, he began a sculpture course with Donal Hord in San Diego. After the war, he attends the Chicago Art Institute and takes lessons from Ossip Zadkine and Fernand Léger in Paris.
His first exhibition was in 1951 at Galerie Parnass in Wuppertal; in February 1962 there was a large retrospective at the same gallery in which the present lot was presented. Tajiri is a versatile artist who, in addition to painting, has also engaged in photography, film and computer drawing. He has lived in Amsterdam since 1956. Tajiri died in 2009 in Baarlo (Limburg).
