In the studio of the artist Freek van den Berg

Beeldmateriaal

Beschrijving

Signed 'Sluijters Junior' (lower right), signed again and inscribed with location 'Sluijters Loenersloot' (on the reverse of the frame); framed in the artist's frame, with an exhibition label of Kunst aan de Dijk on the reverse of the frame. Minor surface grime in places, several small losses of paint in the centre right and one small loss of paint in the upper left corner, else in good condition. Exhibited: 'Jan Sluijters jr. (1914 - 2005)', Kunst aan de Dijk, Kortenhoef, 2013

Provenance: Collection Marijn de Koning; acquired directly from the artist, c. 1980. Notes: Jan Sluijters Jr. and Freek van den Berg were probably friends - or at least acquaintances - as this painting shows a harmonious scene of Van den Berg at work. The two artists were of similar age and both lived in Amsterdam. While Sluijters was, at first, taught art by his father - Jan Sluijters Senior - and then at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, Van den Berg was mostly a self-taught artist. The two painters differed not only in their backgrounds, but also on technical and stylistic level. Sluijters specialised in watercolour paintings, landscapes and still lifes. Van den Berg also made landscapes, but his main interest was painting portraits of elegant women.
