Over Mattheus Derk Knip
Schilder, zoon van Nicolaas Frederik Knip. Hij ging in 1802 naar Parijs en verbleef daar voor vier jaar. Het is bekend dat M.D. Knip landschappen vervaardigde vooral in Brabant, Frankrijk en Zwitserland. Hij reisde van plaats tot plaats zonder een echt thuis te hebben. Knip verkocht zijn werken goed maar signeerde de meeste werken niet. Een uitzondering is het werk "Mountainous Landscape with a Water-mill" (Brussels, Mus. A. Mod). Hij werd later geassisteerd door zijn zoon Henri Johannes Knip.
In comparison with his elder and more famous brother Josephus Augustus we do not know much about Mattheus Derk Knip. The main source of information is his correspondence with his family in Tilburg from the period 1802-1808, when he was living in Paris, alongside the artist brothers Van Spaendonck. In 1808 he moved to Den Bosch, where he stayed until 1825, when he moved to Vught.
Only a few of Mattheus Derk Knip's gouaches are signed, though information from an old inventory means that a further six works can be attributed to him. This drawing is close in style to those works, notably in the foliage, the figures, and the overall approach to the composition (see De familie Knip. Drie generaties kunstenaars uit Noord-Brabant., exhibition catalogue, Zwolle, Noord-Brabantsmuseum, 1988, pp. 56-68, 139).
