Notes:
Hendrik Jan Wolter was a keen traveller and always found inspiration in his journeys. Because of the First World War he had to stay in the Netherlands and paint only in his own studio. Finally, in 1920 Wolter could travel again, initially mainly to England. From the end of the 1920s he returned to France where he painted in Normandy and Brittany, but also more south in Albi and Espalion and on the Riviera, in Sanary, Cannes, Villefranche and Nice. In the 1930's he began his travels to Italy - Rome, Venice, Florence, San Gimignano and Verona. In 1935, he travelled through Spain and painted in Bilbao, Toledo, and Mutriku (Motrico) where this painting was created. Throughout his life Wolter was mostly inspired by harbours, ships and coasts, which he usually painted en plein air (source: Stichting H.J. Wolter).
