Signed and dated 'Joep Nicolas 1938' (lower left); framed. Small loss of paint in the lower left, several areas of craquelure and spots of surface grime, overall in very good condition.
Notes: The Dutch stained-glass artist Joep Nicolas made this serene painting in the summer of 1938, when he stayed with his family at the Villa Huxley of his brother-in-law, writer Aldous Huxley, and his wife Maria in the village Sanary-sur-Mer near Toulon. This monumental, shimmering ode to the French Riviera was painted just one year before Joep Nicolas moved to the USA to escape the war.
