Signed and dated 'Berthe Edersheim '35' (lower right); framed. Strip-lining, tiny dent next to the top of the lamppost, else in very good condition.
Notes: Dutch artist Berthe Edersheim and her later husband, the painter Harmen Meurs, lived on the Amstel, the city side of the river of the same name. Across the Blauwbrug, on the other side on the right, is the Hermitage, then called Amstelhof. Edersheim was a lifelong friend of writer Josepha Mendels and a student of Charley Toorop and André Lhote. Around the time she created this painting she was a member of De Onafhankelijken. Her landscapes are full of life and ambience. As evident in the view of Amsterdam offered here, her main focus was capturing the atmosphere of the place rather than its exact representation. Works by Berthe Edersheim are a rare find.
