View of Rhenen (1929)

Beschrijving

Signed and dated 'G.F. van Schagen 1929' (lower right); framed in gilded frame. Superficial scratches (lower right and in the upper right corner), some surface grime. Frame size 62 x 87.5 cm.

Notes: Prominent in view is the Cunera church, named after Saint Cunera of Rhenen. The Scottish princess Cunera was one of Saint Ursula's 1100 virgins, but she was lucky to escape the massacre with the help from the King of the Rhine. She followed the King to his home in Rhenen, where she did many good deeds. The queen became jealous of Cunera and strangled her to death with Cunera's own shawl. The church of Rhenen, first dedicated to Saint Peter, became eventually known as the Cunera church. The famous shawl miraculously survived through the centuries and can be found in Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht.
