Untitled (1975)

Beschrijving

Signed and dated 'J Nieuwenhuijs 75' (lower centre). Good condition.

Provenance: Estate of the artist. Notes: Jan Nieuwenhuijs was a co-founder of the Experimentele Groep [Experimental Group] in Holland, together with his brother Constant, Karel Appel and Corneille. Later he joined CoBrA but left the group in 1949 to continue his career alone. He did not believe in a completely abstract way of painting. In his own words: "I paint the way I write, the way I laugh. That’s why I paint differently all the time, because my moods change. [...] In abstract painting I miss the beat of this time, the rudeness. We, the people of today we are living with the fear of an atom bomb. The abstracts are building only a superficial world for you. [...] As a painter I don’t want to paint a particular situation. I am not abstract, not really non-figurative. I try to be expressive and therefore I need certain images" (from an interview in 1964, quoted on the website of Jan Nieuwenhuys Foundation). The mythical creatures in his paintings show the influence of CoBrA, but his work was also affected by surrealism. It is a combination of surrealism, CoBrA and imaginative expression that characterises his entire oeuvre.
