Both stamped 'Product of Cor Jaring' (on the reverse). One print creased with several small tears and corners bent; another one shows some light creasing, else in good condition. Book added: Hofland, H.J.A. Honderd mensen van Cor Jaring. Amsterdam, Meulenhoff/Landshoff, 1984, 84 pp., with inscription by the artist (1984). Dimensions: 31 x 24 cm. each.
Literature: Hofland, H.J.A. Honderd mensen van Cor Jaring. Amsterdam, Meulenhoff/Landshoff, 1984, p. 61.
Notes: The portrait of the old man with the cap is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The stevedore - wearing a face mask! - is captured during transshipment of guano (bird manure) in the Amsterdam harbour. According to the inventory of the archives of Cor Jaring in the Stadsarchief, Amsterdam this print is from the series 'Havenarbeid' commissioned by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst in 1976. "Later maakte hij indringende portretten van havenarbeiders. Zo indringend dat je de lading ruikt op de foto van een stuwadoor die in een scheepsruim met mest staat [Later he made penetrating portraits of dock workers. So penetrating that you can smell the cargo in the photo of a stevedore standing in a ship's hold with manure]" (Jaap Stam, De Volkskrant, upon his death in 2013). Before becoming a photographer, Cor Jaring worked in the port of Amsterdam and returned there regularly. First to supplement his modest income, later - still one of them - to make portraits of the dockers. It is this intimacy, which is also reflected in his photos of the provos, of the street and of the art that make his work exceptional, both from a documentary and an artistic point of view.
Two portraits: a dock worker and a workman (1960 & c. 1975)
