Exhibited:
Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum, Kees Verwey in de Verweyhal, February 1993.
Literature:
Huig, M., van Rooy, M. & Hoogendonk, M. (1998). H.F. Boot: legendarisch leermeester van Kees Verwey. Bussum, Thoth, p. 55
Notes:
This painting, one of the last still lifes by Kees Verwey, was described as a stunning proof of the artist's vitality [“verbluffend bewijs van zijn vitaliteit"] and a new high point in the multifaceted oeuvre [“nieuw hoogtepunt in het veelkantige oeuvre”] by de Telegraaf article on Verwey's exhibition at the Frans Hals Museum. As in most of Verwey's later works the light seems to be dispersed simultaneously creating an illusion of ruptured patches of colour shimmering in the artist's studio. Despite these radical endeavours, the shapes of flowers and books lying on the table remain recognisable which creates the impressionist effect. The vital element which is so sought-after in Verwey's work.
