Green and gold patinated bronze on bronze base, signed 'Salvador Dalí' (on the base), and numbered and marked 'VF' ('Vert Florentin' patina, on the edge of the base), signed and numbered again and stamped with the foundry mark 'Cire perdue C. Valsuani' (on the belly of the rhinoceros), cast by the Airaindor Valsuani foundry, Chevreuse and published by Artco France, Paris. Slightly rubbed at extremities in places, otherwise in very good condition. With a certificate of authenticity issued by Artco France, Paris. Literature: Descharnes, R & N. Dalí: Sculptures & Objets. Le Dur et Le Mou. Eccart, 2003, pp. 68-69
Notes: A rhinoceros is a recurring subject in the art of Salvador Dalí. In fact, it was one of the artist's obsessions. One might say that it reached its peak when Dalí painted a rhinoceros in the Paris zoo while he was sitting on a wheelbarrow with a piece of bread on his head. In his hand he held a reproduction of Vermeer's 'Lacemaker', to which the animal's 'clothing' refers. Dalí found a higher unity of nature and art in the conical forms in the painting, the artistic counterpart of nature's perfect logarithmic spiral that he saw in the rhino's horn.
