Beschrijving
Signed 'H.F. Boot' (lower left), titled and dated (on the reverse); framed in contemp. frame. Small nail holes along the lower edge (probably original state, one with inpaint), good condition.
Notes: After the turn of the century, Henri Frédéric Boot did not follow his contemporaries in adopting modernism, but stayed true to the nineteenth century style. His work is part of the collections of Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem; and other museums. This is a portrait of Dora Rodrigues Pereira at her sweetest, between two tragedies. Five years earlier her mother already had a daughter Dora, who died within a year. The Dora pictured here would amply survive her mother, she died in 1999, at the age of 89. Her mother was killed in Sobibor in 1943, her sister Selly a year earlier in Auschwitz.
