Signed and dated 'Jan Wolkers 1952' (lower right); framed. Several (small) losses of paint in the centre, else in good condition. Frame size 93 x 98 cm.
Provenance: Collection Eric Wolkers, son of the artist, since 2017; Collection Jeroen Wolkers, son of the artist; Estate of the parents of Maria de Roo. Notes: During the early years of marriage to his first wife Maria de Roo, born in Goes, Jan Wolkers spent a lot of time in Zeeland. Oostkapelle, where his in-laws had a holiday home in the dunes, seemed like an ideal place for art and the young family. Unfortunately, marriage and parenthood were a major challenge for Jan and Maria. Quarrels, infidelity and especially the horrific death of their daughter in 1951 were in the background of the painting. But on the canvas the vitality that characterises Wolkers triumphs, this work has no shadow. The artist left Zeeland, but the painting remained in Oostkapelle. His eldest son Eric acquired it from the estate of his brother Jeroen, who came to live in his grandparents' village in 1993.
