Literature:
Poliakoff, A. (2012). Serge Poliakoff: Catalogue Raisonné, Volume IV, 1963 - 1965. Munich, no. 63-305, archive no. 765007
Provenance:
Galerie d'Eendt, Amsterdam.
Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 30 October 1979.
Acquired at the above sale by the present owner.
Notes: Created at the peak of Poliakoff's carrier, this work, despite the unconventional for the artist technique, combines the most supreme elements of his painting developed over the years. In Poliakoff's mature works formal asymmetry reinforced by ingenious compositions consisting of different blocks of colour creates surprisingly peaceful and harmonious impressions. As for his works on canvas, colour, shape, volume, and especially the way Poliakoff exposes different layers of paint, become a powerful tool to reach the desired effect. These compositions reminds us of a puzzle which starts by placing the pieces around the edges, to finally interlock the last missing elements in the centre. But what really shows Poliakoff's ingenuity is that from these apparently constructivist compositions, the artist creates a harmonious whole.
In the 1960's Poliakoff travelled through Europe for numerous exhibitions where he met fellow artists and searched for innovative ways of expression. On multiple occasions he has also visited Amsterdam. One of these short episodes in the Netherlands resulted in a series of glass tableaus created in cooperation with the Leerdam company in Amsterdam. Interestingly, the city of Leerdam is famous for its high quality glass production all over the country. Leerdam's glass, known for its transparency and clearness, might be exactly what helped Poliakoff to achieve the same effect he was aiming for in his works on canvas - layered structure and voluminosity.
