Signed lower right and dated 1965, and signed again and titled on the reverse. Provenance: The private collection of Dutch author and publisher mr. Jan Schilt (1927-2015), Amsterdam. Acquired directly from Mrs. Maria Hofker-Rueter (1902-1999), with whom mr. Schilt published the booklet ‘Maria Hofker’s Indische impressies’ (H.J.W. Becht, Haarlem, 1994). Encouraged by his achievement of winning the second price of the prestigious 'Prix de Rome' in 1924, Willem Gerard Hofker (1902-1981) dared to establish himself as an independent artist in Amsterdam, shortly after his graduation from the Royal Academy of Arts.
Portrait commissions hence were his main source of income. In 1930 he married Maria, the daughter of the highly respected artist George Rueter. The couple was very fond of each other and ever since Willem had portrayed her enchanting features many times. When Willem and Maria had their 35th anniversary, this magnificent portrait of Maria was created. Her characteristic appearance, with a tender look of love, shows fully the impeccable skills of Hofker.
