Le Taxi Cabossé, Four-Wheeled Dents

Beschrijving

Mixed media object, base 40x110x95 cm. Executed in 1982.

Provenance: Acquired in 1982 directly from the artist for the Peter Stuyvesant Collection. The profits of this lot will be donated to Stichting Stichting AAP in Almere.

The present lot represents a model for Project Arttaxi. In 1982, the Peter Stuyvesant Foundation commissioned four artists to each transform a Parisian taxi into a ‘mobile work of art’. Models were designed by François Morellet, Wim T. Schippers, Daniël Spoerri, and Michelangelo Pistoletto. The taxis were presented to the public and press on the square in front of the Centre Pompidou. After operating for two years and transporting tens of thousands of passengers, the taxis were taken out of circulation to be exhibited as part of the Peter Stuyvesant Collection. Schippers decided to take a sledgehammer to the Renault 18 GTL taxi. Initially, he provided precise instructions to his assistants, whose task it was to ‘pre-dent’ the car. However, they soon entered a group frenzy, incited by Schippers, leaving the car looking as though it was ready for the scrap heap. In the two years that followed, the damaged Renault nonetheless operated as a Parisian taxi – to the shock of tourists who thought they had hailed a cab driven by a reckless driver. Wim T. Schippers says about this taxi, ‘Everyone thinks the first dent is the worst. With my taxi, I have solved this problem. A new car loses something when it is dented or scratched; in this case, it gains something. It’s poetry on wheels.’
