Biografie: Victor Bonato

Victor Bonato, formerly also Vittorio Bonato was a German artist. Victor Bonato completed a professional training as a glass painter in 1948. From 1956 to 1961 he studied wall painting at the Cologne factory schools . He stayed in the United States for several years to study. Together with Joachim Bandau he co-founded the Cologne artist group K-66. In 1966 he began his freelance work as an artist, primarily with socially critical visual work. In 1969 he worked on deformations of glass mirrors under the aspect of irritation of visual and behavioral habits. Since 1974 he has been teaching adult education. In 1975 he offered creative work for juvenile offenders in the Siegburg correctional facility. In 1979 three-dimensional mirror objects and glass mirror torsions were created. In 1982 he dealt with the archetypal phenomenon of polarity. Two years later he received the first prize at the flag festival on the occasion of the first Bonn art week. In 1984, together with Joachim Bandau, he created the Troisdorf city gates , which were set up at the end of the pedestrian zone in Alt-Troisdorf.

In 1987 he was given a teaching position in the department of art and design at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal University . From 1991 he dealt with paraffin and wax work. In 1993 he was awarded the August Macke Medal (Bonn), two years later the Ida Gerhardi Förderpreis (Lüdenscheidt). From 1994 onwards, works were created with shredded DM banknotes under the headings “Value Change” and “Wages for Work”. Bonato was a member of the West German and the German Association of Artists . He lived and worked in Niederkassel . In May 2019, a few days after his 85th birthday, he died after a long illness.
