Signed 'J.V.D.ZEE' (lower right); framed. Relined, small loss of paint in the lower centre, else in good condition. Frame size 43.5 x 40.5 cm.
Provenance: Private collection; Kunsthandel Richard ter Borg, Groningen. Notes: Jan van der Zee was a member of the artists expressionist association 'De Ploeg'. Portrayed here is probably the artist's daughter Dicky Bijlstra (1926). She does not recall posing for her father with enthusiasm: sitting for a portrait took ages, and it was a challenge for her to stay still (source: Groninger Museum Magazine, 2011, nr. 3, p. 57).
