Wth impasto technique, signed and dated 'J Altink '35' (lower left), with another (unfinished) painting on the reverse, inscribed in pencil with name and address of the first owner (upper left) and again on the stretcher; framed in gilded frame. Several superficial scratches with losses (upper right in the air), else in good condition. Frame size 83.5 x 98 cm.
Provenance: Private collection, by descent; acquired directly from the artist, c. 1950.
Notes: Jan Altink was one of the founders and a leading member of the artists association 'De Ploeg'. The Paterswoldsemeer is a lake in the Dutch province of Groningen. This painting shows the lake on a gusty day: threatening skies, wind blowing whitecaps, and sailors taking advantage of the weather while it lasts.
